Diane Moore, deacon at Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, is this
year's recipient of the St. George's Episcopal award.
The award is a national recognition to acknowledge distinguished
service by adults in the spiritual, physical, mental and moral
development of youth service to the church and through national agency
programs.
Moore was presented the award Sunday during church services.
The St. George's Award is signed by Bishop Kathryn Jefferts Schori.
"Diane has been a deacon in the church, was the longtime executive
director of the Bayou Council Girl Scouts, and executive director of
Solomon House," said the Rev. Mark McDonald of Episcopal church of the
Epiphany.
"Under her leadership Solomon House has and still is thriving in the
city of New Iberia. Diane is a class act individual and she sets a
great example for everyone on how to live a Christian life."
The award was a surprise to Moore. She was nominated by fellow church
member John Aldridge.
"I was up there preaching away about Mother's Day, and then I stepped
down and got this honor," she said. "It was overwhelming."
Candidates who were nominated for the award must meet a number of
requirements which some include: Encouraging youth to join a national
agency program, exhibit past and present leadership and be fully
trained in their area of responsibility, and promote religious
observances at national youth agency functions at all levels.
Moore served on the executive staff for the Bayou Girl Scout Council
for many years. While there, she implemented camp days for underserved
girls, earning her the Diversity Award in 1997.
She also served as a cadet leader for Girl Scouts in Iran.
Moore has also worked as executive director of Solomon House.
"Somebody had done some extensive work into my background," she said.
"It was just really humbling."
